HELPFUL TIPS FOR WRITING WYOMING STATE LEGISLATORS

IMPORTANT:

  • You’ll write your message in the text box on Step 2, where it says “Personalize your message.”
  • Your message will go to 15 members of the Wyoming House of Representatives who we’ve identified as “swing votes” on this issue. You’ll write one message, and the form will send it individually to each legislator.
  • Don’t click the “Send message” button until you write your message.
  • REMEMBER TO DELETE THE TEXT THAT SAYS “[DELTE THIS TEXT AND INSERT YOUR MESSAGE HERE]”

YOUR MESSAGE SHOULD HAVE THREE SHORT PARTS:

1. Say who you are.

Tell them your name, that you’re UW student, where you’re from, and (if you want) what you study.

My name is ____. I’m from _____. I’m a student at UW studying ______.

2. Say what you want.

I’m writing today to ask you to vote “NO” on Amendment 48 to the House Budget, which affects University of Wyoming student healthcare.

3. Say why you want it.

Be brief here, but explain why you’re writing. You can say something like the Legislature has no business deciding what kind of healthcare students receive—talk about BIG GOVERNMENT! Plus, students pay for health insurance with their own student fees.

PRO TIPS

Keep it brief: Lawmakers are very busy, especially during the legislative session. If you write them a novel, they’re not going to read it.

Change the message subject: This will make your email look less like spam.

Include your cell number: Lawmakers’ email messages are public record. They are often very careful about what they write. If you include your cell phone number and ask them to respond, you might get a call back (though not during the Legislative session).

Tell lawmakers:

UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING STUDENTS DON’T WANT THE LEGISLATURE MESSING WITH THEIR STUDENT HEALTHCARE
