HELPFUL TIPS FOR WRITING THE CORPORATIONS COMMITTEE
IMPORTANT:
- You’ll write your message in the text box on Step 2, where it says “Personalize your message.”
- Your message will be sent separately to each member of the Legislature’s Joint Corporations Committee.
- Don’t click the “Send message” button until you write your message.
- REMEMBER TO DELETE THE TEXT THAT SAYS “[DELTE THIS TEXT AND INSERT YOUR MESSAGE HERE]”
Have questions? Check out this video tutorial about using Better Wyoming forms to email legislators.
YOUR MESSAGE SHOULD HAVE THREE SHORT PARTS:
1. Say who you are.
Make sure to tell them that you’re a Wyoming voter.
My name is ____. I’m a Wyoming voter and I live in ______.
2. Say what you want.
I’m writing today to ask that you stop drawing district lines for political advantage and instead ensure they fairly represent the people of Wyoming.
OR
I’m writing today because I saw that you’re drawing district lines to specifically protect some sitting legislators and I want you to stop. Remember you work for the people of Wyoming, not your friends in the Legislature.
3. Say why you want it.
[This is where you can add a sentence or two about why fair voting districts are important to you. See talking points below.]
PRO TIPS
Keep it brief: Lawmakers get tons of emails. If you write them a novel, they’re not going to read it.
Change the message subject: This will let them know your email is not spam.
TALKING POINTS
Maybe mention a few of these things in your message.
- Wyoming’s population has shifted from rural to urban areas over the past 10 years. Our election districts and representation in the Legislature should reflect this shift.
- “Redistricting” should be a process to fairly and accurately represent population shifts in our election districts, not a tool to attack political enemies or protect political allies.
- Many communities—including Albany and Laramie Counties—have had public meetings to discuss how their voting district lines should be drawn. The committee should respect this local input. In the current map, they are comletely ignored.
- Drawing zigzagging district lines to specifically include or exclude sitting lawmakers is completely inappropriate. Stop trying to protect your friends and do your job for the people of Wyoming.
