The plot to ‘DOGE’ our state Health Department

You might remember that in early 2024, Better Wyoming ran an advocacy campaign during the Legislature’s most recent budget session to encourage lawmakers to fully fund the Wyoming Department of Health Department.

The campaign was a success and Better Wyoming helped protect the Department of Health’s budget from dramatic cuts. Now, a current so-called DOGE effort puts that work at risk.

But we're not going to let the Freedom Caucus cut our healthcare quietly.

Local op-eds by two Better Wyoming volunteers hold Freedom Caucus lawmakers publicly accountable for their scheme to slash funding from the Wyoming Department of Health.

Their articles help ensure that folks in Sheridan and Powell are aware of what is at stake if this harebrained DOGE-ing succeeds, and to make sure everyone knows which local politicians are responsible.

The Sheridan Press: Letter: Pendergraft wants to slash Wyoming Health Department’s budget

This type of work is an extension of our Grassroots Accountability Campaign, which is designed to let residents know exactly how the politicians representing them in the Legislature vote on important bills, and what they are up to in general.

We know that with the Freedom Caucus in charge, we have little realistic chance of running advocacy campaigns that bring about positive change for our state.

The Freedom Caucus takes its orders from Washington, D.C.—not their local communities—and with a well-funded campaign apparatus, they feel like they don’t need to do what’s best for the folks back home.

We’re going to prove them wrong.

Better Wyoming is focused now through the 2026 elections on making sure that people across the state are educated about how their own local lawmakers vote, and that our neighbors have the information they need to cast ballots that will result in the best outcomes available for them, their families, and our communities.

With outstanding Better Wyoming volunteers writing hard-hitting, targeted op-eds like these, we believe we will succeed.
