Ask Senator Olsen to OPPOSE BOOK-BANNING

OVERVIEW

Our Wyoming Legislature's Joint Judiciary Committee is debating a bill that will ban books that certain lawmakers find objectionable. Worse, this bill will punish librarians and educators, and it infringes on parental rights in our communities.

The committee will decide whether to sponsor the bill for the next legislative session at its meeting on Monday, Oct. 13.

Your local Senator Jared Olsen has concerns about this bill, and it's vital that he hears from voters in his district who would like him to vote “no” against sponsoring the bill.

Please join us in politely and respectfully communicating your concerns.

We’ve included Sen. Olsen’s contact information below.

STRATEGY:

THOUGHTFUL MESSAGES FROM CONSTITUENTS

First and foremost, it's essential that our messages are RESPECTFUL AND POLITE. Rude or angry messages will work against us!

Senator Olsen is concerned that the bill inserts the government into decisions about what children should read that should be made by parents.

We need to let Sen. Olsen know that parents, and people who care about parents, do not want the Legislature banning books and deciding what children can access.

A STATEWIDE EFFORT

All over Wyoming, folks like you are stepping up and speaking out against censorship

Your voice is ESSENTIAL. Senator Olsen has a key vote on this bill. Respectfully asking them to oppose book-banning can help this anti-freedom, anti-education bill die.

YOUR MESSAGE

Keep it simple. Your message should contain three short parts.

  1. Who you are: My name is ______. I’m a voter in your district.
  2. What you want: I am writing/calling today to ask you to oppose the bill that would ban books from public and school libraries.
  3. Why you want it: Include a few (brief!) lines about why you believe this bill is bad for our community.

TALKING POINTS

  1. MAIN MESSAGE: Book banning infringes on parental rights.
  2. We support parents', families', and communities' freedom.
  3. Avoid words like “obscene” or “obscenity”; call this what it is: censorship and book-banning.
  4. Remain respectful and polite.

CALL OR TEXT SEN. OLSEN

Now that you know the strategy, it’s time to get ahold of your local state senator, whose job it is to represent you in the Legislature.

CALL OR TEXT, BUT REMEMBER: BE RESPECTFUL.
